Reimagining STEM Education: College Spark Invests in Student-Centered Science Learning Across the Puget Sound Region
A new investment from College Spark Washington is helping ensure that equitable, culturally responsive STEM education continues to grow across the Puget Sound region. Through a three-year, $180,000 Education Equity Fund grant, Puget Sound Educational Service District (PSESD) will launch the Puget Sound Science Leadership Collaborative, bringing together educators and district leaders to transform how students experience science learning. The initiative brings together two powerful networks—the Revolutionary Instruction for STEM Equity (R.I.S.E.) Network and the Leaders for STEM Equity Network (LSEN)—to create a shared vision for culturally responsive, justice-centered STEM learning that reaches classrooms and district systems alike.
The project will engage educators and district leaders from Bethel, Edmonds, Federal Way, Highline, Kent, Lake Washington, Puyallup, Renton, Seattle, and Tacoma school districts in a coordinated effort to make STEM learning more relevant, engaging, and empowering for students.

At the classroom level, STEM educators will participate in year-long professional learning focused on designing curriculum that connects science and technology to real-world challenges such as climate change, public health, renewable energy, and environmental justice. Students will be invited to see themselves not simply as learners of science, but as problem-solvers and community leaders capable of shaping a more just future.
At the systems level, district leaders will work together to identify and remove barriers that have historically limited equitable access to high-quality STEM learning opportunities. By aligning leadership practices with classroom innovation, the project seeks to ensure that effective approaches can be sustained and expanded across schools and districts.

When students can see their communities, cultures, and experiences reflected in what they learn, they are more likely to see themselves as future scientists, engineers, innovators, and leaders.”
The Puget Sound Science Leadership Collaborative aims to help more young people see STEM not only as a pathway to opportunity, but as a tool for improving their communities and shaping their futures.
A distinguishing feature of the project is its deep commitment to community partnership. PSESD will work alongside organizations such as Black Farmers Collective, Brasilia Bio, and Front and Centered, as well as youth advisors, to co-create learning experiences that elevate community knowledge and student voice.
Rachel Clements, Program Officer for the Education Equity Fund, said the project stood out because of its potential to influence both instructional practice and district systems.
“Too often, equity-focused innovations remain isolated within individual classrooms,” said Clements. “PSESD’s approach creates the conditions for successful practices to spread and endure. By connecting educators, leaders, students, and community partners, this initiative has the potential to reshape how STEM education is experienced by thousands of students across the region.”
The grant comes at a pivotal moment. The collaborative was originally poised to launch with federal funding that was later withdrawn. College Spark’s investment will allow this work to move forward and continue building momentum toward a future where all students have access to engaging, culturally sustaining STEM learning opportunities.
For Washington state, the project offers a promising regional model for strengthening STEM education while advancing educational equity. Lessons learned through the collaborative will be shared through cross-district learning opportunities, public showcases, and regional STEM convenings, creating opportunities for impact beyond participating districts.
