Fostering Belonging, Building Justice: LEADER Affinity Groups at ESD 112

In the Vancouver area, a quiet but powerful movement is growing—one rooted in connection, vulnerability, and the shared vision of a more just education system. Through the LEADER initiative, ESD 112 is creating space for educators to come together in Racial Affinity Groups—intentional, identity-centered spaces where the often-unspoken realities of race, identity, and equity are brought into the light.

Each month, BIPOC and White-bodied educators gather in separate but parallel groups, supported by trained facilitators. These gatherings are more than meetings; they are sacred spaces where educators reflect on their racial identity journeys, share experiences, and build authentic relationships across difference. It’s hard work—requiring honesty, courage, and deep listening—but it’s transformative.

In a world often divided by race and injustice, these affinity groups offer what many educators don’t often find: community, healing, and the freedom to show up as their full selves. Without intentional spaces like these, such crucial conversations wouldn’t happen.

“It’s a place where I come to fill my cup. I always feel like I just came to the watering hole—my cup is filled, and now I’m leaving replenished and renewed.”

The impact is real. Educators leave feeling heard, understood, and re-energized to support students—and each other. As one participant put it, “It’s like coming to the watering hole. My cup is filled, and I leave renewed.”

The video below shares the stories of those who are courageously stepping into this work—deepening their awareness, uplifting one another, and laying the groundwork for a more equitable and inclusive future. Their journey reminds us that change doesn’t begin with systems; it begins with people.
